Automating the Inspection of Composite Fiber Layup Processes

Goal: Create an automated inspection process which would quantitatively analyse robotic fabric placement during the layup stage of carbon fibre manufacturing.

I developed an automated 3D scanning methodology to measure the positional accuracy of dry composite fabrics after robotic handling. This work aimed to evaluate and improve robotic accuracy, enabling better design optimization and reducing rework costs in the manufacturing process.

The process I developed:

Robotic prepreg layup

2. Robotic Scanning using the Metra3D Scanner by Creaform

1. Manual Scanning to develop process

4. Measuring and Comparing results to CAD using CATIA

3. Automating the post processing of data using VX Modelling
